Stop-watch Functions

Check out the chronographs to find a dive watch with this function. Most manufacturers offer several different chrono models to choose from. They are readily distinguishable by the two or three smaller dials set in the watch face. Most will time events in minutes, seconds, and some portion of seconds.

Maximum event duration is usually 30 or 60 minutes, although some will time up to 12 or 24 hours and longer. The vast majority will also have a unidirectional (one-way) rotating elapsed time bezel, allowing overall event timing in addition to the event being timed with the chronograph.

A stop-watch function can also be found on some of the higher end dive watches that incorporate dive computer functionality. But look for a description stating specifically that a chronograph or stop-watch function is included. Otherwise the elapsed time tracking on these models is triggered by the dive itself and not controllable by the diver.

Uses for stop watch functions related to diving are many and varied. Most common are tracking bottom time at one or more levels in a particular dive profile, surface intervals (SI) or off-gasing, and no-fly time. For those diving without computers, a chronograph is a useful tool, but even for computer divers they come in quite handy.
